Retail Banking

The Retail Banking division deals with everything to do with selling ANZ products and services - from branch management and product development to marketing and online strategy.

Referred to as 'the face of the bank' Retail is the largest division of ANZ and where the majority of customers come into contact with us. Retail manages a wide range of core functions including the branch network, contact centre, online and mobile banking, products and marketing.

At ANZ, our goal is to be New Zealand's best bank by helping New Zealanders achieve more.  In Retail our frontline colleagues do this by truly understanding the needs and aspirations of our customers, giving them great service and providing them with financial solutions to help them achieve more.

The Retail frontline is supported by an innovative Product and Marketing function that is responsible for delivering products including credit cards, mortgages, transaction banking, savings accounts, deposits, and personal loans. These products are supported by our capabilities in customer analytics and research, strategy and marketing. The Retail Division also includes the online and mobile channels for ANZ which are focused on delivering innovative banking solutions for customers.

Our Retail head office staff also play an important role in building New Zealand's best bank. They work on an exciting variety of projects that meet the needs and challenges of today, as well as set our strategy for the future.

Individuals who have high levels of flexibility, excellent communication skills and a willingness to deal with challenges will thrive in this environment. It is particularly beneficial for individuals who are focused on moving into leadership roles in the future as the Retail Division has more people-leadership roles than any other division in New Zealand.

People who are studying or have completed Commerce and Business degrees and who achieve consistently high level grades are well suited to a role with Retail. As the core of the Retail business is our Branch Network and Contact Centre, at least one of your three rotations will be in the frontline of our business.  Each Retail graduate will experiences three unique and tailored rotations. Commercial and Agri

Commercial & Agri is about taking care of business. From smaller home-based businesses to agricultural farming operations, our people manage everything from day-to-day banking, to lending and investments.

Overview

How long: 24-month program (4 x 6-month rotations)

Commercial & Agri at ANZ is about taking care of business! From smaller home based businesses right through to agricultural farming operations and everything in between, Commercial & Agri has a diverse focus on day to day banking, lending and investments, and helping our commercial customers achieve their goals.

Commercial customers are predominantly privately owned businesses with an annual turnover of between $2M to $250M. Our Agri customers have business limits greater than $500,000 and total farm income will typically exceed $250,000.

Commercial & Agri combines the best of both worlds in thought leadership, reputation and market share. We are a powerhouse in the NZ banking sector - $35 billion lending book and a team of over a 1,000 staff. As a relationship-driven business we are structured into four regions: Northern, Auckland & Northland, Central and Southern. Being close to our customers and understanding their local markets and economies means we are strongly positioned to support their growth and ongoing success.

Who do we look for?

Our ANZ Commercial & Agri graduates are all-rounders when it comes to business banking. Successful people within the Commercial & Agri business take an end-to-end approach to their work, willingly take on challenging assignments, collaborate across other cross functional areas of the Bank, understand the business operations and are able to articulate our customer proposition and how business decisions and processes benefit the customer.

For this reason, our best Commercial & Agri graduates have generally had a few years experience in a customer facing role, even in a part-time capacity. They are usually individuals who build and maintain relationships in a business environment, forming key networks to appropriately handle their workload. Those that are able to manage themselves autonomously are highly regarded, with team work also an essential ingredient for success. Ideally our graduates have a base level of understanding when it comes to the principles behind how a business or farm financially operates. Some knowledge of lending products is useful, but not essential.

Students who are studying, or have completed, Commerce, Agri and Business degrees with consistently high level grades are well suited to a role in Commercial & Agri Banking.

A double degree is desirable, but not essential, and a high grade point average will make for a competitive application in this client-focused division.

Operations

Operations ensures that the entire business can continually and efficiently deliver great services to customers and stakeholders, by delivering outstanding products and services to our customers globally.

Overview

Retail Operations is at the heart of ANZ's retail brands in NZ, helping our stakeholders support customers to achieve their financial aspirations. The key functions in Operations include assessing lending applications, processing loans, transaction and account processing as well as detecting fraud.

Operations is part of a broader Business Unit called GTSO (Global Technology, Services and Operations) and the Operations team works closely with the Services and Technology teams to deliver our business strategy. As well as exposure to Operations, you would also have the opportunity to work with the Technology and Shared Services teams as part of your day to dayday-to-day work or as rotations.

Shared Services includes teams that are responsible for processing accounting, HR, procurement and Property transactions/ queries as well as business analysis, driving process improvement and project management. Technology is responsible for providing IT solutions and infrastructure, including the development, maintenance and support of technology solutions, for staff and customers around the globe.

The ANZ graduate program offers the chance to rotate within Operations and Shared Services, as well as a possible rotation in Technology to gain a real breadth of experience across the key areas of GTSO.

Who do we look for?

Our graduates have a focus on the big picture. They are inquisitive about the internal processes that affect the broader ANZ workforce and are keen to be involved in improving and implementing new ways of doing things. People within the Operations and Shared Services division have a methodical approach to their work, understanding that streamlined processes drive quality projects and deliver the right outcomes for our customers.

Technology plays a significant role in driving the success of ANZ. Technology is responsible for providing IT solutions and infrastructure, including the development, maintenance and support of technology solutions, for staff and customers around the globe. Whilst we primarily work with our internal clients, we have significant impact on the experience of our external customers every day.

We aim to understand the business' strategies and needs and be seen as strategic advisers, offering outstanding technical competence, secure and stable environments and smart solutions that are consistently delivered.

The areas of ANZ Technology that you may be exposed to during the program are:

  • Delivery Services
  • Business Technology Partnership
  • Technology Business Services
  • Information Security Office

Technology is part of a broader Business Unit called GTSO (Global Technology, Services and Operations) and the Technology team works closely with the Services and Operations teams to deliver our business strategy. Who do we look for?

If you're a Technology graduate at ANZ, you will be multi skilled. You'll have fantastic technical ability but you'll also have great people skills. Working with others is something you enjoy and do well, and you are a team player who can also execute tasks autonomously.

Ideally you will be the type of person who has a focus on the big picture and a genuine interest in how you can contribute to Technology at ANZ in a broad sense. Understanding how technology supports and shapes the way we do business - for ourselves internally and for our customers - is something you will need to grasp early on to be successful in this function.

Students who are currently studying or have completed degrees such as the following may be suitably skilled for our Technology area:

Accounting

Group Financial Management is responsible for the overall financial management of the ANZ Group. This area touches every division of ANZ's business and graduates are Accounting enthusiasts.

Overview

Where: Auckland, Wellington

How long: 24-month program (4 x 6-month rotations)

The Finance Graduate Program exists across Central Finance, Divisional Finance and Finance Professional Services within ANZ to give a well rounded understanding of its operations. This area of the bank is somewhat unique as it touches every division of the broader ANZ business while supporting and influencing so much of what we do each day.

Central Finance is responsible for the Bank's performance management and planning, balance sheet, external reporting, taxation and governance matters.

Divisional Finance works in partnership with business units and other functional areas within the division to provide performance insights and deliver strategic solutions to achieve financial outcomes.

Financial Control has a primary focus on ensuring the integrity of the financial information under a common operating model globally. In addition to 'closing the books' each month they also deliver high quality financial reports and insights to optimise our accounting and reporting processes. Financial Control works in close collaboration with the Central Functions and Divisional Finance teams.

Who do we look for?

Successful ANZ Accounting graduates are accounting enthusiasts. Our Accounting graduates are passionate about working for an area of the bank that is influential in finding financial solutions for internal and external customers.

We look for people with excellent quantitative analysis skills. Strong capability in understanding and interpreting financial information and an understanding of financial business concepts and practice are highly regarded, but it's not all about numbers.

We also look for graduates with a knack for being able to translate and communicate their work and their solutions to non-technical audiences as well as key stakeholders within the bank.

Having a big picture view of banking and finance will assist your success in this area by considering who and what your work will affect. High levels of adaptability/flexibility and a willingness to deal with constant change and challenges will set the scene for success.

Our Accounting program is highly sought after by graduates with a passion for accounting. High achievers - both academically and in other areas - are looked upon favourably.

ANZ Accounting graduates have the option to receive study support towards their CA or CPA qualification from commencement of their program.ANZ is the second highest employer of NZICA members in New Zealand.
